School Shootings
Is it just me or are the drills about intruders in the buildings a bit fake?
We had one the other week and apparently we can't lock the doors (fire marshal)
so the teacher opts for a piece of wood
Our guidance consuler (can't spell, sorry) came and opened the door asking if we were about to lock it so our teacher puts the wood in the slot
(it's an open top with about 3 inches of space the put the wood
Well, she puts it in and Mr. Norton (guidance) pulls on the other side-
it falls out
I never felt some unsecure in school in my life
So, my idea was this:
In a newspaper I read not to long ago, a Texas man (not sure if it was a board member or a government person) but he offered that they teach kids not to 'sit there like good little boys and girls and wait to be shot' but to IMMEDATLY begin to throw anything, even a desk, at the shooter before he could even raise the gun
I'll always remember the part in his ending quote:
that a couple of 7th graders and a 98 lbs art teacher could take down a 200 lbs gunman
I fully agree with this
Also, about a month ago, a news team (in Anne Arundel County) tried out the school securities to see if they could get into the schools without having to sign in, just as a complete and total stranger
It DISGUSTED ME the outcome!
So many didn't stop the reporters (whom they didn't know were so) and just let them wonder
Most of the teachers even smiled and said Hello while the people didn't even have a Vistor's Pass on!
and while my school did stop them, my feeder school DIDN'T !
The person just walked around for 20 minutes, and although asked to check in, didn't and wasn't stopped for it
So, how does anyone else feel one this?

Shootings
I totally agree with you! The drills at school are so short! How can anyone believe there is an intruder when the drills are 5 seconds long?
~Phangirl of the Opera
School Shootings
they don't even take it seriously
my teacher even said that (that she didn't think it would happen
Shootings
That's probably what the teachers thought in Colorado...

School Shootings
and Pennsylvania
Shootings
Exactly, and kids died from the carelessness of the security!!! I think there should be more REALISTIC drills, not 5 second long ones. And volunteers who would be the 'intruder' for drills and teach students how to defend themselves.
~Phangirl of the Opera
School Shootings
give them a helmit, upper body armer (like football gear or something) and give um a stick (cause you can bring a stick into school)
If we can have 'bully lessons' in class, why not INTRUDER SAFETY!
I asked my teacher what we'd do if the intruder were to get into our classroom
All she said is that we'd just go to the band room (which is right next to ours)
but the way we know, we'd just be sitting begging for mercy and if we tried to run, 10 would be shot before we could get to the next room
Does anyone else feel anything one this?
School Shootings
hi sam, sarah (um sam i emailed u ) but i know how is a piece of wood going to stop a gunman from entering the classroom?! and they do fall out when mr. Norton pulls on it
School Shootings
I asked for a meeting with the principal 2 weeks ago
I'm still waiting for a notice
I'll ask again at lunch
It's just, this type of stuff freaks the heck out of me and after hearing about Pennsylvania, I'm just... gah! I don't know
I shake when I talk about it
Wait, which were the other shooting (I know there's more than the Omish girls (Sorry, I know I spelled that wrong))
School Shootings
In my opinion it's the fact that they don't even care about the students saftey in some situations. I mean if you think about it manlly the only reason they run these dumb drills is because the county makes them.
School Shootings
that and probably because the parents got on the school board after the incident
School Shootings
I also think school shooting drills are so unrealistic
We have to sit in the corner of the room. With our door window covered and any windows in our room covered. With the lights off.
But if every room has the door covered and the lights off, wouldn't it seem kind of suspicious. :eusashifty: :eusashifty: :eusashifty: :eusashifty:
Lets say their was a shooter in the building... How would the office and everybody else find out?
I hate to say it but
THEY WOULDN'T
School Shootings
wow
I wish we even did that
but with that kind of situation, there'd most likely be some kind of camotion that would give the classrooms around them the hint
but I wonder what we'd all do if the person snuck in through a side door and jumped into a classroom
we should do drills with real people. All they have to do is jump in and let the students react
although I doubt the schools would do that
they don't take it seriously enough
Re: School Shootings
What a topic...I see TOO many complaints though.
 How does one protect over 1,000 students from one spantanious shooter :?:
Im honestly glade to here that your administrations are taking a step towards protecting you guys from such dangers. Instead of complaining on the failures of the "shooter drill", realize that such drills had never been conducted before, and try giving suggestions from a student prospective; exactly what you've provided here - some are scared, some don't feel it's realistic, and others can see where the drill needs "plenty" of help.
 How is the prevention to get better if we dont learn from the simple "mistakes" you guys are pointing out :?:
 Continue what you're doing, but change the tone.
Re: School Shootings
omg we just sit there and do nothing. in our gym they have us face the bleachers in a line almost like they are line us up to soot us. it is so stupid
Re: School Shootings
There has been alot of school shooting in the Country this year and if there would to be a shooter to come into my school i don't think we would know what to do there fore ending with a lot of casulties
Re: School Shootings
Hello I am the student member on the security council and next meeting I will bring this topic up because I completely agree with you! Please don't stop because I need all the information and veiws I can get!
Re: School Shootings
I agree.....
However, my L.A. teacher once told us that if an intruder came in to stab at him with anything we have, pencils and stuff. But realize, I don't think they are allowed to teach us to attack people, even intruders with a gun.
On the other hand, some things go on like cameras and stuff so that those circumstances only occur when an intruder actually gets in the school. Hopefully some of these things are brought up at the meeting!
Re: School Shootings
*after two years*
I suppose the last thing people want to show us is how to attack people (with how older people view today's generation)
But something should be done in some ways
Also, the reason things like these drills didn't use to be done was because these problems weren't quite as serious way back when. But in today's world, I feel that the situations NEED to be more realistic. Because to unseriously proceeding with a drill is preparing students for NOTHING! I don't care if the school sends a letter to tell parents that they'll do more. From a students POV, that means squat.
Re: School Shootings
I agree, these problems are much more serious now that things like recent school shootings have happened. They are proof that it has happened anywhere. Kids need to know how to defend themselves.
Re: School Shootings
Any suggestions on how this can be done?
Perhaps a self defense class as a PE elective in highschool?
Re: School Shootings
That might be a good idea, the only thing is that the kids need to understand that they can't use the self defense on anyone in the school, and you would probably need waviers.
Re: School Shootings
perhaps
any suggestions yourself?
school shooting
well...
because these things are spontaious and can even happen because student[need i remind you of colombine] it could be very hard to defend yourself from a gun but i do agree that many things should be done. In the omish scocity there is no modern day conveininces such as a metal detecter or automatic doors that are unlocked from the office so they didnt have the benifit of the doubt. the drills schould be a little more realistic so that people can get a feel of what to do. like at my friends old middle school when doing tornado drills they playyed wind sounds and glass shattering sounds over the pa so people felt in the moment.
