that would be good but i dont think the BOE (board of education) would like that because the kids would goof off and we already dont have enough time to get all of our work done if we add a free period then we would have to either extend our school year or extend our days :!: :?: but that would be totally cool :!:

yeah camp letts was awesome wat color group were u in??? gold 4 me !!! u should meet with the board even if we get longer time b/t classes it would help :!: :?:
I totally encourage the free period idea. But, when you present it to the Board, it would probably be more tactful to suggest it as a monitored study period. "Free period" doesn't have a very good connotation when taxpayers are paying for children to be in school every day. Anyway, best of luck. It's great that you guys are taking the initiative to contact the Board. They really listen to students more than anyone else.
I also think it would be cool to have a free period. But the kids at my school would go nuts. Study period sounds better. YOu could use it to do homework, but it could also be used as what my school calls Help day. Every one would have to be in a classroom. Media center for homework. Gym for socializing. Something like that might work.
P.S. I was in the Purple group :!:

I would be all for extending the school day if we could have a free period because that would be an oppurtunity for us to chill out and get loose energy out and teachers would know we would be focused cause we had a free period. We wouldnt have an excuse to not have our homework done! If we had to name it "study" period then that works too!
My Idea was that if we can get more periods but not lengthen the school day the last period should be a free periods or as other schools put it "study hall" that would be a helpful time to get homework done and study. Also many schools start at diferent times and somtimes don't have enough time to finsh homework and if we can get the bord to let us have "study hall" then mabey people can get some homework time or even try to make all schools start at the same time would help.

Yes i really think there should be a free period when maybe a team has time to go into the library with all there teachers there for extra help and more! It would really increase the amount of Homework turned in and better test scores! :)

there really should be a free period in all middle and high schools, because all day we work and have to pay attension. i think we should have the oppurtunity to take a short break, to relax with friends and get some homework done!!
I agree, a study period would be great, especially with the new absurd amount of work students have with so many ap classes
also, because the middle school schedule gives so little time to gym (some students have 15 days a year!) I would support recess for middle school too.

only 15 days!
we have that in one quater
but the thing with recess is that they don't want fighting.
in middle school, it seems like people are always fight each other, and recess would give students a good chance to go somewhere they're not allowed to go
although... maybe it would work out if we had a free period once a week, or something like that (since they're so reluctant to give it to us)
When i was in middle school we had an "advisory period" once a week for like 25 minutes. we were supposed to read or do hw. That disappeared in the new schedules that came the next 2 years, but it has worked in the past. I think a regular at least 60 minute reading period would be nice in middle school.
I understand your point about recess. I just think students need some type of break during the day, adn the current schedule does not provide for that at all, as it doesnt provide for regular exercise.
Because that was the year of the 6 period day--a terrible schedule that turned out to be so restrictive in terms of class options that it was illegal. When the new 7 period day came in, it ididnt matter that they eliminated the 25 minute break, because we could take so many electives a break was no longer needed--and with 47 minute classes school was actually, dare I say it, fun. However, the next year, the 4 period day was standardized, and long classes with few electives and no break periods became standard and acceptable. Though, I'm glad I only went through the current middle school schedule for one year.

lucky
the 47 min does sound fun though
and with the short electives, a break probably wouldn't be nessesary
but with the new one, with over an hour for 4 classes, a break would be nice, besides just a 5min break to stretch your legs
I agree, but then maybe it would just be best to get a new schedule altogether? This brings us into another forum, but the idea is still relevant. With 86 minute classes though, I dont see why one day a week they couldnt shorten each class by 6 minutes, and give a 24 minute advisory period. It wouldnt be much help, but it would be better than nothing.
The whole thing that teachers worry about is that the children will act up and run crazy!!!! So idk if the teachers or administaration not to mention the board will aggre w/ our ideas.
I dont think a "Free Period/Study Hall" would work :!:
If students aren't able to complete their hw within the given time either it's their fault/laziness, the material isn't being taught/understood, or the teacher is giving too much homework (inconsiderate of other teachers giving hw.)
 If you guys are willing to extend the School Day for a "Reading Session", then that time would be put towards more class time.
 The more you learn the material the faster/easier you'd beable to do/practice it at home (HOMEWORK).
:) Don't get me wrong I would love a RECESS, but at this level of mental maturity (expected maturity), the BOE couldn't allow it.

The thing with having something like study hall is to take away the 'I was busy' excuse and to allow students to ask a teacher for help is you'd didn't understand something
Study Hall can be an optional class to sign up for for those students who need it, still leaving 7 classes of instruction (which is perfectly reasonable). I know I have between 3-6 hours of homework a night , and I don't feel like it would be selfish to ask 86 minutes of in school work time 2-3 times a week.
My school (everyone) has Seminar 3 times a week. They would squeeze a 1/2 hr. between first and second period on specified days. Every freshman Seminar has at least two seniors instructing what the teacher would be doing; not to mention giving their personal experience/recommendations.
My opinion has changed on having Seminars - at least in this fashion. Having Select Seniors deliver the message to incoming freshman is easier for them to accept. This time, though, isn't spent making up work nor seeking extra Academic help; it, rather, encourages the freshmen to get off on the right foot - improve better overall work habits (including behavior).
The Schedule is also set up so that on the "non-seminar" days, students have an extra 1/2 hr. to catch up on work - ask Academic questions (aka Study Hall). The final Seminar of the Week is "Drop everything and read"; which some students do hw.
 A drop of maturity 3 times a week will make its mark.
 I need not mention a schools potential after many years of this pratice (just think of this on a county level).
That's really interesting. How long have you had that? Do you think students who don't usually do hw do it during the extra time? Do you think having a break improves your performance in class later in the day? What do seniors have during these periods?
