School Start Times
I want to hear what you all think about school start times. Currently, our high schools have the earliest start time in the state. I have received numerous e-mails urging the board to delay the start time.
What do you guys think? When is the appropriate time to start school? Do you think your academic performance would improve if we started later?
Thank you for your input!

School Start Times
Well I'm not in high school yet, but I don't think the times should change :!: No matter when you wake up, you are going to be tired. If sports get switched to before school, they will most likely be less popular. If you don't want to get up to go to class and do work, why would you get up to do viggerous physical excersize, AND THEN go to class and do work :!:
School Start Times
I agree! I am also not in High School yet but it is really all their desicion when to go to bed! If school start times were later kids would go to bed later, and/or be tired anyway because they just woke up! :)

School Start Times
I'm going to high school next year and I don't think that the start time should be changed because the people complaining about waking up, need to I guess go to bed earlier, because this way we will still have time to go places later in the afternoon, and if sports were changed to the morning then less people would participate and it would wear people out even before school started, making people extremely tired in class...I think it would be more tiring to run some laps before class then to get yourself up in the morning..
Starting Time
Hey Pallas
 I think the starting time should stay the same. It shouldnt matter if we're the first to wake in our state. In the Camp Letts discussion today, people mentioned how moving the time back would badly effect the students and the communities they live in. Some said that it would decrease homework/study time, sport players wouldn't find proper time to practice/play, and employers would have to adjust or fire some of their student employees. I've figured that any student in an extra curric. act. have time comittments that may allow only one more occupation out of the day. Be it working, baby sitting, or church, every student has a life outside of school. And moving the starting time would take away valuable time.
I think you should do a survey on all AAC students on:
How many participate in Extra Curric. Act.?
How many have "personal occupation"(work, church, baby sitting, etc...)?
How many have both?
And base the results on those statistics.
*Thanks for the opporatunity*
school start time
I think that middle school and high schools should start later than elementary schools. I have two brothers in elementary school and they are always up before I am out the door to school. I think we should have the later time because we are older and tend to sleep longer than most younger kids. Also, if we have a later start, we will be more focused during school and not so tired. If we do get a later start, we would have time to do extra-curricular activities in the morning as opposed to staying after school so long.
School Start Times
Thanks Reggie! That is a great idea. I think I will post such a poll (as soon as I figure out how to use the polling feature).
And thanks for all the other input, everyone else. What would you think of an 8:00 start time (not enough time to negatively impact extracurriculars, but enough time to get a little extra sleep)?

I think that you shouldn't change the times because highschoolers will still have to be there early because there probably going to change sports and stuff, so what's the point? Plus, most of them have jobs so they won't be able to get as many hours at work as they could have if the times changed.

Start times
Hi,
I don't like the current school start times (7:17am) but I know that everyone will complain about the later dismissal time. I love getting out at 2pm, so I am willing to wake up early.
But I know of people that fall asleep in 1st period, and that is a problem.
Regards
Brian :)

To all the middle schoolers speaking for high schoolers: I suggest you read the already made discussion on this topic. The issue is a lot more complicated than go to bed earlier. If that was a solution, this would not be such a big issue!
School Start Times
I just wanted to let you all know that the Board has decided to host a public forum to discuss school start times on December 14th at North County High School. If you are concerned about this issue, please attend and state your opinion. The Board is especially interested in what the students think about this issue. Hope to see you there! :D
School Start Times
arent there better issues our board can fight about
what we have is good
keep it
School Start Times
the issue of school start times is a problem for a lot of students! That's why the board is looking at it! as saget1 said it is a known fact that Adolesence(and/or teens) have problems going to bed before 10:00 or 11:00! Therefore they need more sleep! which cuts into the school start time issues! The board(correct me if I am wrong) is looking at this issue for the high schoolers more than any other school! And if the students are tired! that means that there is less participation in class which brings people down grade-wise!
School Start Times
ok our students are just LAZY
thats the problem we cant follow the idea
Early to bed, early to rise
-Ben Franklin
That should be the answer its the kid problem
they have enough time early in the afternoon-900 to watch tv do homework and hang out with their friends
if they can afford to slack off bc. of a tv show
then they can afford TIVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:
School Start Times
well in some respects Ben Franklin was wrong! Because I go to bed late and still wake up early with out anyone waking me! It is natural for an adolesence to go to bed later!
School Start Times
well u know what i din't mean every one was this type of case if they can't follow that motto then o' wel
School Start Times
School start times should stay the same. What about the students who work after school, or those participating in extracurrilular activities. If the High School start time were moved back the students would just adjust. They would go to bed later and wake up later get the same amount of rest as before.
School Start Times
The argument I keep hearing over and over is that we should keep start times the same because changing them will mean that we'll get out of school later, have to change job hours, have no time for homework and extra-currics, etc. So I have an idea: why not just start school at 5:17 a.m.? Think about it! If we started at 5:17, it really wouldn't be all that different because we'd still get up in the dark and wait for the bus in the dark. We'd still be going to school before most adults wake up. And we'd still be sleep deprived. But on the positive side, we'd be done with school by 11:55 p.m. We'd have the whole afternoon for sports, jobs, babysitting, church, homework, whatever--even a nap!
The point here is that there's nothing sacred about 7:17 a.m. and arguing about the benefits of early dismissal is missing the point (if these are the things we care about, why not just start at 5:17?). The fact that it's earlier here than everywhere else makes you wonder if we couldn't at least start 30 or 45 minutes later. Everyone's just arguing against changing times because they can't imagine a world in which things are different than the way they are. Once you get out of that way of thinking, you realize that schools should set their hours based on what's right for learning and safety and health of the students--not on the basis of jobs or sports or anything else. These things adjust to work with school hours, not vice versa. Other school systems start later than 7:17 (and many have changed to later times), and the kids still have time for homework, sports, church, jobs, and babysitting. They also are better rested and less likely to be in car accidents, abuse stimulants, and experience depression, etc. They also stay awake for class and get their homework done more efficiently because they're AWAKE. When you think about it this way, you realize that we might actually be able to make a change without the world coming to an end--and with a lot to gain!
School Start Times
Students will ,esepcially teenagers, will get the sam amount of rest no matter if you start later. And most of the students that sleep in class are bored not tired. Maybe you don't work at a job that requires certain hours. Maybe your afterschool activitiy doesn't use up your time. But of the students that i have talked to and my situation it is a problem pushing back the start time.
School Start Times
There are studies that show that it's not simply a matter of going to bed earlier, seeing how teens have hormonal imbalances that make it difficult to fall aspleep before 11. (just restating what ostrichlady and sage said earlier). The other point made was that people won't appreciate later dismissal times. While this is definately true, i don't think changing it to 2:30 is that much of a sacrifice. High schoolers all over the country get out at that time or later, and are fine balancing sports and other activities, academics, and their social lives. The health and academic success of our students is well worth getting out a half-hour or forty minutes later, in my opinion.
School Start Times
THe time are fine right now. I fyou want to do something about students sleeping in class impose harsh penalties, or have better content. The tow proposal were around 8:00. which is what you were saying and that would cost a lot of money. And the other was 9:00 which would cost less but would have the most detrimental effects.
School Start Times
Hi,
I think the school start times should stay the same. The High schools dont wake up much earlyer then we do because my bus comes at 8 and i up at 7:20 and my brother leaves for high school at 7 witch is only a 20 minute diference! Their schools might start earlyer but next year when I get to high school it wouldnt be that bad getting up that early in the morning to get out at 1 or 2! :D
School Start Times
If I am not mistaken the measure to change school start times didn't hold up with vote so they will not be changing next year.
skool start times
I do not think we should change the school start times because no matter what time you wake up you should be ready for school. It just causes more problems. Some people have gotten use to the routine changing it would cause confusion :?: Changing it would make a lot of ppl mad
School Start Times
The proposals at least three of them that they had this year didn't pass. Some of them I understand why and others had a close vote (4-4) DOes anyone no whether there is still a proposal left?
School Start times
I agree with that Ostrichlady person. This is high school for goodness sakes. You shouldn't rely on your parents to wake you up every morning. Why do you think they invented the alarm clock?
However, if the lunch times could be shortened by just 10 minutes, schools could open 30 MINUTES later and still get out at 1:55, eliminating the problem with jobs and homework etc.
School Start Times
let me get this straight. You rather cut 10 min. off lunch which happens to be one of the only free periods of our day inteasd of ending school at 2:05
School Start Times
what would you rather have, 25 minutes of "free period" and starting school at 7:47(30 min. more SLEEPING TIME), or 30 minutes of "free time" and starting school at 7:17. Sacrificing 10 minutes to talk with your friends to gain 30 minutes to sleep. I think the answer is simple.
School Start Times
That would only leave the lunch at 15 mins , which would be to short. I don't know the exact time but school have to provide luchs and for a certain time by law. (Because of students who get free and reduced lunch something they wouldn't get out of school)
School Start times
If you can READ AND DO SIMPLE MATH, you'd know that I said that taking 10 min. off of each lunch, going from 35min. to 25min. Was that to hard for you to comprehend
I don't really have a problem
I don't really have a problem with the schedule. I would rather get out at 2:05 and go in at 7:17
Starting time of school
I think we should start at 8:30 and end at 2:30.
If you like to sleep you will second this vote.
Starting Time of School
I'm not in high school, but it's really early! Well, I just moved here and we didn't end school till 3. I was the last stop so I didn't get home till 4. Then I didn't finish my hw till 5. So then we ate dinner and shower and bed! No free time at all! So i'm liking the early end of the day.
