okay well as we all know, the marching band, the drama club, and the dance team are all banned from performing in this years pep rally. every athletic team will be on the field for it, and possibly showing a skit.

at every football game the marching band plays, and will also be playing at the homecoming game, but for some reason are not allowed to play at the pep rally. the dance team/club/troop whatever already has a skit made, and has been practicing since summer. however, mr.mook says, "dancers are not athletes" which therefore means they can't perform in the pep rally. since when are dancers not athletes, but cheerleaders are? i think the majority of our school favors the dance team, but that's not the subject. the drama team, which performs a skit every pep rally to advertise their fall musical is also not allowed to perform, but they have no other way of really showing people what to expect.

might i remind you that in every year that i have attented sphs (i'm a senior now) every athletic team has done absolutely NOTHING for the pep rally except run across the field screaming, while the only three acts that actually practice and plan ahead for this function are in fact the band, the dance team, and the drama troop.

i believe it's a sexist move on behalf of our athletic director. i've heard rumors of a petition going on, but i'd like to let you know that i'll be attending the board of ed public meeting this wednesday to discuss it.

This is a county wide poll! Not everyone on this site goes to sphs! It is anne arundel county students.org! An I personally don't think you should bring it up to the board of ed. the highest you should go is the principle!

:P sara :P

well the administrator was glad i did

I think hollyjo is correct.

This forum is for the students of Anne Arundel County, and hollyjo obviously is one. While this may not affect the rest of the county, it affects her school and the 2000 kids that go there. This is an issue in the county, and therefore it has its place here and at the Board of Ed.

While this isn't too bad -- and this applies to everyone -- every member has the responsibility to be polite to others. And believe me, although everyone likes being able to state their opinions, there is really no place for gripes about the content posted except privately with the forum administrator and the author of the offending post.

did anyone read the article in the Metro section of the Washington Post? It stated that the dance team was allowed to go, because they argued that they were discriminated from going and that it was a sexism issue.

I also, go to sphs and am a junior

they mentioned that nobody really thought the Starmites play did well

the article is in yesterday's Washington Post (forgot the section it's in)

doing well is not the point. The point is where our school has it's priorities, in athletics or in all afterschool activities equally. If we are going to be pulled out of class to celebrate out of school activities, we have to celebrate all of them, not just the sports.

By the way, even though you may not go to SPHS, this issue questions the school's priorities. That is why it made such big news. If the only people this mattered to were at SPHS it would not have been made such a big deal!

pep rally

Heck yeah theater should be included

Pep Rally

I'm a Freshman @ SPHS and from what I've heard, the sports director (won't mention the name) only wants the juniors, seniors, and sports teams to do anything fun. We are planning our winter olympics and winter pep rally and he only wants juniors and seniors to attend while freshmen and sophomores are left out. I don't like his way of thinking, we are as much a part of SPHS as everyone else!

THAT SOUNDS REALLY BIASED! DO YOU KNOW WHY?

Pep rally

I would like to know what is so biased.

Huh

What does biased mean?

sphs pep rally

Um, I go to SPHS and I just want to say that the drama works really hard to put on our productions. I am a freshman this year and our drama club worked really hard to put on Beauty and the Beast...

I hope that in the future the school board can prevent discrimination like this again in our pep rally...

sphs pep rally

YOu would have to include everyone.

sphs pep rally

My parents and other people I have talked to have said that at their high schools, pep rally used to be everyone. It was about joining the school together. They said that even the chess club would do something. Why can't we do that too? Why does Severna Park have to be so sports oriented?

sphs pep rally

It is like that at old mill as well but sports are a big part of high school.

sphs pep rally

But so is drama and dance and SGA and many other things.

sphs pep rally

Dance usually puts on a show that is at least two parts at ours. and SGA is the one who organizes the who thing.

sphs pep rally

Well, this year, Dance almost got excluded, but they were the only ones that our coach let back in the Pep Rally. Everyone else got excluded. But...at first, the dance was excluded as well.
