Dr. Smith's departure
By now, I'm sure that most students have heard that Dr. Eric J. Smith, the Anne Arundel County Superintendant of Schools, will be leaving us in November. I, like the rest of the class of 2006, still remember being in high school when Dr. Carol S. Parham was Superintendant. Thus, I have some insight into what county middle and high schools were like when Dr. Smith arrived. I was just wondering how the rest of the students around the county are reacting to the news of his departure, and what you think it means for the future of Anne Arundel County Public Schools.

Dr. Smith's departure
I am a little worried. Regardless of Smith's actions during his time as superintendent, I think with him leaving during the middle of the year our school system is in trouble. All these people celebrating his leaving need to get over it and face reality-we dont have a superintendent anymore and finding a better one in time will be almost impossible.
Dr. Smith's departure
I don't think anyone cares that he's leaving, either! But as saget1 said we will have a vacant board position at the top of the chart! Even if we did get one! It will take time before he/she completely settles!
:P sara :P
Dr. Smith's departure
From what I can tell, Dr. Smith is leaving mid-November, and when he does, the Assistant superintendent will assume his duties.
I don't think it's right to be 'dancing on the grave' of Dr. Smith, either. While students may not enjoy certain initiatives set forth by the superintendent, you must realize that it was not just him. He had the support of many parents groups (did you see the Capital story that said something like "Parents strongly support Smith" or something?) and some of the community.
You must realize that he was not joining our system with the intent of hurting it, only that some of his initiatives were not very "well received," to put it politely.
And, as saget1 pointed out, we will be without a leader until one can be acquired.
Dr. Smith's departure
It'll be a shame to see Dr.Smith leave! :(
Dr. Smith
 It's bad news to have him leave in the begining of the year. I think the system will struggle with all the switching of power.
Dr. Smith's departure
i'm really not sorry about dr. smith's departure and i don't feel like i have to apologise to anyone about that comment. i did not like the way he handled the schools, and in my opinion, some occupations can't be messed with, policepeople, doctors, and teachers. if you think about it, with out these people (and many others) these people hold a lot of power, and are not recognised for it. with out police men, there would be even more crime then ther is now, which is alot, with out doctors, disease would rage uncontrolable, and without teachers, there is no one to educate the youth of the public. no one put a gun to dr. smith's heaad and said "you must cut the teachers pay in anne arundel county!"! he didn't have to, and why should he care as long as he dosen't get a paycut. last year our teachers were working to ruling, and i'm suprised they didn't have a full on strike! i am excited to experience the ways of a new superintendent! :)
Dr. Smith's departure
Although I feel as if it was a failure plan, Dr.Smith did do the 4 Period day! The Teachers thought they needed that time! i m not saying that u are wrong, because you do have the right to opinon, but I disagree! Yes the teacher salary was a bad desicion, but look at all the other things he accomplished!
Dr. Smith's departure
I hope that when Smith is gone, the middle school (and high school maybe, I'm not sure) can switch from the block shcedule to whatever there was before. I have no idea what that was, but I'm pretty sure that it was 6 periods a day. Something like that.
Smith created the 4 period day to let us have more time in each class, but he elimenated some important things in our schools. For example, science and social studies. We have each for half a year. Well, if you have SS the first semester, and the next year the same, you'll forget everything you learned During the half year you don't have the class plus time during the summer.
Also, the 4 period day completely destroyed our time for elective classes. You have to take PE and many students have a music class like Band, Strings or Chorus. After those, you can take another year long class or 2 half year classes. In 7th grade and up, many students take a forgein language and then you have no fun activities during your school day, unless you like PE.
Smith created the four period day. It didn't work and should have been changed when it didn't. Hopefully, when Dr. Smith leaves, the problem with the four period days can be fixed.
Dr. Smith's departure
I completely agree, there are a lot of problems with Smiths 4 period day at the middle school. However, i hope the new superintendant wont change the high schools schedule because it works very well there.
Dr. Smith's departure
hes should be killed i liked the old days
back when milk was brought to your door
ok, but u get my point
Immature
i really don't think this blog/site was ment for people to make some type of "Hit List". Could you please keep the immature comments to yourself?!
Dr. Smith's departure
saying someone should be killed is not the wisest or most respectful thing to do. Remeber the rules of the site be respectful.
Dr. Smith's departure
Ditto.
Dr. Smith's departure
You should never want to kill anyone! Especially if it is only for a schedule! No one died the schedule! Can't be that bad.
Now back to the topic! I think that everyone can agree that this schedule definetly has it's pro's and con's. I personally think that there are more con's than pro's. I can understand why the schedule was established in Anne Arundel County. It is just I think it was a failure plan. Can people please respond. If you disagree, please share why. But if you agree, please help continue to find possible solutions to this problem!
Dr. Smith's departure
THe middle school schedules I don't even understand. A day B day C day
one class half a year. Just fron talking to my little siter I get the idea that there needs to be some teaking there. The 4 period days are slightly long buthtey are barable however inefficent.
