The current start time is detrimental to the education, health, and safety of the student body. Recognizing that teenagers have a different sleep cycle than that of younger students and adults, a new system should be instituted to address all of the serious problems that sleep deprivation creates for high school students. Anne Arundel has the earliest start time in the entire state, and other school systems still manage to excel in extracurricular activities and hold afterschool jobs. By making high schools start at least 30 minutes later, with consideration towards the needs of middle and elementary school students, the Board of Education would prove its commitment to helping all students learn to the best of their ability.
