Musical Teachers and Principals

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm sick and tired of seeing all the teachers (and administrators) leave. Seems like every time I turn around, someone else is going. Like I just found out my guidance counselor left this summer, and I'm going to be a senior! Three English teachers are leaving as well. How are we supposed to get college recommendations when people never stick around long enough to get to know us?

They also seem to pull out principals and assistant principals all the time, even in the middle of the year. How does this help the students?

Musical Teachers and Principals

You are right! All the teachers can never stay! Not that we can really do anythin about it!

Musical Teachers and Principals

it doesn't.
but, maybe if the county would pay their teachers enough they'd want to stay in the system.
i think it's horrible that we have one of the lowest base salaries for teachers in the state.
teachers are one of the most important jobs in our society. they are the ones who are teaching us all the things we need to know so we can make it in this world, and they're also grossly unappreciated and underpaid.

Musical Teachers and Principals

definatly!

They are forming the minds of tomorrow! That sounds extremely corky!but It's true!

Musical Teachers and Principals

That's true about a lot of the teachers but what about principals?

My little brother is going into 5th grade and has had 3 principals since kindergarten. I think they them around too much even in the middle of the year. the little kids don't even get to say goodbye.

And it's not just principals. Lots of teachers are my left in middle of the year to go work at the board of ed (some kind of administrator). That left their classes in a real mess and no one knew what was going on. I can understand teachers leaving cos they're not treated or paid well but I can't udnerstand why the school board or whoever it is keeps moving people out of the schools and classrooms all the time.

You know you have to get teachers to write you recs for college, right? How are you supposed to do that when they all keep leaving or leave before they get to know you?

oh yeah

that is totally true at my school we had a guidance counseler, administrator, and 4 teachers leave this year and they all knew me very well

Musical Teachers and Principals

They leave with out you knowing! I hate it! But what can we do about them leaving!they get another job!

lunarlady is quite right. The low salaries that are causing administration and staff to quit are also affecting the students indirectly. Maybe the board was not aware of this.

I, for one, have more than once changed out of a class because I knew that the teacher was less than stellar; if the county wants better standerdized test scores, they should realize that they get the staff that they pay for.

Last year, my school (Severna Park High) got dozens of new computers to replace the fully functional, if not speedy, old ones. In my AP Lang & Comp class, three BRAND NEW textbooks were handed out to each student (which came to a total of about 120 students); the cost of each was between $40 and $75. If we had used them every day, I would not be complaining but only one of the texts was used more than once. Hm....I won't even go into the brand new collector's edition of Native Son that every student was also given. I ask, is the AACPS money going where it is needed? at the time those books were purchased, Arundel High was still scrabbling for money for their new and necessary air conditioning system.

as for the music teachers: rather than buying yet another set of computers for the high schools, the board could instead hire new music teachers. Having been exposed to three different music directors in the county, it has been my opinion that many of them are particularly good in schooling either an orchestra or a marching band. I know the severna Park high orchestra is in need of a new orchestra director that can teach its students better.

the salaries are so low in our county, i'm surprised that any teachers stick around at all!! not only the low salaries, but have you seen the house prices in our county lately?! do you realize how many teachers live out of county or even out of STATE and commute to work each morning? why work where the pay sucks and you can't even live where you work? we have a serious problem here, and it's only going to get worse unless something is done. salaries can be raised, if we have better management *ahem* but how can housing prices be lowered?

Musical Teachers and Principals

Actually, even though the teachers have a lower salery than most teachers of well known counties in the state, they have a shorter work than all those teachers we point out as being paid more and getting better test scores as a result(montgomery and howard county)

Musical Teachers and Principals

what do you mean by a shorter work? do you mean like a shorter work period? or a shorter work year?

Musical Teachers and Principals

sorry i meant shorter week, they work less hours

Musical Teachers and Principals

but that doesn't change the fact that they are paid close to nothing

Musical Teachers and Principals

they may be paid little in money, but you can earn benefits, especially health benefits through a job too, not just a check.

 Just because a teacher (administrator or principal) leaves during your 4 year term of high school doesn't mean they didn't give 15 years of devoted time prior to your arrival. It was just your term they decided to leave. And it doesn't mean they couldn't give a college recommend, you would just have a harder time finding them.

The turnover rate in schools is higher than you expect. IT is average to have people leave over a 4 year span, and like Reggie said they could be retiring after 15, 20, even 30, years of service to the community ,school and students. It is also not uncommon for administrators and prinicpal to get promoted for the job they are doing. Music teachers usually leave because of a higher paying job at a private school or go full time to their area of interst (i.e. performing, composing, private lessons) and when your a teacher in AAC how can you refuse the better pay.
