How are your music classes run, specifically orchestra and band? Do you learn to read music? Do there seem to be any goals in the class?

I have had a lot of elementary school violin students and am always amazed at the low quality instruction they are receiving. I was wondering if classes have such incredibly low standards around the county, or if it's just my area. Any information would be very helpful. Thanks!
