The abc elective rotation

What does everyone think about elective availability in the middle school? This is DEFINITELY a topic of discussion this year, so please let me know what you think!

(ideas: what do you think of gym every third day, orchestra 1 to 2 times a week, but for 86 minutes, do 7th graders have enough elective opportunities if they choose to take a foreign language, etc.)

Also, if you have an idea of what would be a better way to approach "electives," please let me know.

Re: The abc elective rotation

ok well heres what i think.......

8 Period days this could relly work if we can do it right.
Sample-
First period-Language arts
Second Period-Encore one
Third Period-Science
Fourth Period-Encore two
LUNCH
Fourth Period-Encore two
Fifth period-Social studies
Sixth period-Encore three
Seventh period-Math
8th period(30mins long)-Study hall

I know I know HOMEWORK! :x BUt when you think about it it would only be adding one core class and maybe a little bit of encore HW but not much.

Another thing((((GYM EVERY DAY!!!)))) well thats not a bad thing either.....America is trying to b agienst obesity (MAINLY YOUTH) Well a well balanced workout everyday is just what we need right?

Re: The abc elective rotation

But think about this, if gym is every day, and you take foreign language everyday, that leaves only one other elective, which is certainly not enough. However, if 2 of the electives were every other day, they would still be helpful, but you could take more.

This schedule probably couldn't work though because of teacher workload. Teachers don't like having a lot of classes everyday. It gives them less time to plan and more papers to grade.

Re: The abc elective rotation

So what you are saying is a AB class schudle??? That would work better and the thing with the teacher workload its relly only adding 1 or 2 classes because you have your encore periods were they dont have a class. Also is less stuff to plan about because there are shorter classes. If not an 8 pd day then somthing that would make the classes shorter. Becase i mean 86 mins is a long time to try to pay attention.

Re: The abc elective rotation

Although the new schedule would bring more homework , you would have the new study hall period to get some done .

At my school ( George Fox ) We have a Gray and Maroon Day for Science/Social Studies , and for the 8th graders , Foriegn Lanuage / Language Arts .

Our Schedule is

HR
1st Core Class
2nd - Encore A/B/C
1/2 of 3rd block
LUNCH
1/2 of 3rd Block
4th block

and on some days we have advisory periods to have special lessons .

This is an ok schedule , but many teachers don't do alot in the last 15-20 minutes .

If the classes were shortened , and we have advisory everyday , we could have time to do extra homework , or catch up on some reading .

Re: The abc elective rotation

I would love to have eight periods, when we had 2 hours late i think everyone was more focused because there is less time for them to try and cram things in ur head. And stay on one subject. I think it should be:

1st: Language Arts
2nd: Encore 1
3rd:Science
4th: LUNCH
5th: Encore 2
6th: Math
7th: Social Studies
8th: Encore 3

So this way we will have time to focus and go to all of our classes in one day. Instead of doing Science - A day S.S- B day
I think it is so confusing. And maybe we might be able to go to our lockers every 2 or 3 class periods.

The homework load wouldn't really increase greatly and we wouldn't have to be retaught everything everyother day!!!!
